Conservative responses to the limited release of documents involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the previous administration highlighting the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while different voices lamented how extensive redactions portray former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Fervent Rhetoric
Justice Department representatives defended the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “At no point in American history has a President or the Department of Justice been this open with the public about such a sensitive legal matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter describing the censorship process.
Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's name and image appear in some of the documents, the extensive black blocks raise serious questions about the information may be concealed behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded increased openness.
“The public are furious and walking away,” posted Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship break the statute, and implied that a future legislature may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this file dump egregiously fails to comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Conservative Commentators Rally In Support of the Disclosure
But, some conservative pundits and Trump loyalists came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a DOJ run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are completely redacted, and numerous of the individuals shown in photographs have their faces blacked out.
But a few are not, including high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, allowed some conservative figures to go on the offensive.
“This is quite ironic how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Clinton Spokesperson Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been hiding these documents for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from information they’ll try and hide permanently. So they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response concluded.
Overall Conservative Commentary Seems Subdued
However, overall comment on the right was comparatively muted following the release, especially when juxtaposed against the loud demands for action that came before the legislative vote to pass a law mandating the documents' publication.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal proponents for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing influencers were provided physical folders of files that contained no previously unseen data.
