Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, but Jones insists he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team secured a decisive win.
“It was regrettable. It was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “Present was a large group of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the gesture was completely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply put up the incorrect digit,” he noted. “It was accidentally performed. I’m not kidding. Should you call it unplanned, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”
League Context for Proprietor Penalties
This incident isn’t the first time an league proprietor has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Previous cases involve:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at fans in January 2024.
- Then Titans proprietor Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
Jones, who is known for his publicity flair, reportedly has an estimated wealth of around $16bn, so the fine easily payable for the billionaire owner.
